The Zanzibari Hotel

Located in Nungwi, on the north coast of Unguja, the Zanzibari Hotel advertises itself as boutique. With only eight rooms this hotel is for the traveller looking for a more personal service than that offered at the larger resort style hotels that dominate in this region.

Accommodation at The Zanzibari Hotel

The hotel offers twin, double and triple rooms, all with en suites with separate bath and shower, verandas, sea views, air-conditioning, hair dryers, fridges and coffee making facilities. The hotel is currently building two luxury suites. When completed, these will house up to four people. We are led to understand that they will feature flat screen televisions with the latest satellite options, iPod docking stations, Jacuzzis and room service.

Other facilities include a large pool which is open and lit at night and where complementary tea and cakes are served at 1700 daily, rock pools which are being converted into Jacuzzis, a traditional spa offering a range of massages and beauty treatments and internet access (Wifi is currently being installed).

Food and Drink at The Zanzibari Hotel

The hotel offers a half-board package; breakfast, dinner and the complementary tea are included in the room price. The Zanzibari’s Dhow Bar and Restaurant features an authentic dhow sailing boat which now functions as a bar. All the restaurant furniture is crafted from reclaimed dhow wood. This makes for a unique eating experience.

The food on offer is fresh, well prepared and various. Breakfast consists of cereals and fruits and hot options made to order. On the evening menu there is always a choice of fish or meat. Vegetarian options should be available, but contacting the hotel in advance might be advisable if you have special dietary requirements. The bar atmosphere is friendly and relaxed with the added bonus that you can sit inside the old dhow boat to enjoy your drinks.

Zanzibari Hotel’s Service and Location

Hotel staff are very friendly. As the hotel is small they are always on hand to help with any difficulties you may have. The hotel managers are very caring and keen to oblige. Staff manage to not be intrusive despite their numbers. The hotel is clean and well looked after.

The hotel is in a quiet location, separated from the other beaches and the tourist life of local Nungwi resorts (though these are within walking distance). Though the hotel has no private beach access there are many quiet beach spots nearby and the hotel has a small sanded area near the pool for guest use. The secluded location of the hotel and its size make it more peaceful than other local accommodations.

Activities the hotel offers/ can arrange include water-sports; snorkelling, kayaking, diving, dhow trips. Yoga is also on offer as well as excursions to Stone Town and the Spice Plantations. These services all cost extra.

How to get to The Zanzibari Hotel

The Zanzibari is about an hour’s drive from Stone Town and Zanzibar Airport. The hotel will happily organize a transfer and their cars carry up to 6 people. Alternatively, a shared minibus (bookable at Stone Town hotels) runs from Stone Town daily to Nungwi for around USD 10. Alternatively one can travel by daladala (route 116). These bus-come-trucks can take far longer (up to three hours) and are not comfortable. However, they are cheap and if you are looking for a real-life Zanzibari experience you might consider them.

Driving through the poorer parts of Zanzibar can be disheartening to tourists, especially considering the almost hypocritical luxury on offer at many of Zanzibar’s resorts. It is important to remember that this country is still developing and that some uncomfortable scenes of poverty are to be expected both on the roads, and in the towns and villages.
